All you need to know about corrugated boxes

Some Insights

So you must get familiar with this little known but important packaging material.

What is Corrugated Box?

Well, a corrugated box is made using corrugated paperboard. What is a corrugated paperboard you ask? Well, it is a specialized paperboard that is several layers of think and comes with several rows of air columns.

These columns make the paper strong and in turn the box stronger. Furthermore, the air inside the columns acts as a form of cushioning material for the item that needs to be transported or stored.

How are Corrugated Boxes Manufactured?

Here is a brief about the processes corrugated box manufacturers use to manufacture corrugated boxes –

  • Corrugated paper is fed into the corrugators.
  • The corrugated cardboard is then glued with multiple layers (three to be exact, which is the standard thickness) of the same material using corn starch glue.
  • The cardboard is then fed to preheating rollers set at a temperature of 350-365 degrees Fahrenheit, then into the corrugating rollers. Steam is forced through each set of these rollers at a pressure of 175-180psi.
  • The corrugated rolls thus formed are then covered with IO flutes.
  • Next, the corrugated rolls pass through a single-facer glue station. Here, one layer of glue is added to the medium. The medium is then sent to the double backer glue station. Here a layer from the bridge is added. Then the cardboard is sent through steam-heated plates, in a bid to cure the glue.
  • Now the cardboard is trimmed into large sheets, otherwise known as box blanks, and then stacked.
  • Then the box blanks are sent to fabrication machines where printing dies prepare patterns on rubber or tin sheets. These dies are then loaded onto a roller through which the box blanks will be passing though thus getting the desired pattern or logo.
  • Then the box blanks are cut, scored and folded, to form a box.

What is the Difference Between the carton box and corrugated box?
